Auburn University-Montgomery Hands Lady Pilots 5-2 Defeat
September 16, 2007
MONTGOMERY, ALA.—Tschana Wade and Anna Johnsdottir scored two goals each to lead the Auburn University Montgomery Lady Senators to a 5-2 win over LSU-Shreveport in women’s soccer action.
AUM (5-3) out shot the visitors 24-11 for the match with 15 of those shots being on goal. LSUS goal keeper Kelsi McNew did an excellent job in a losing effort with 15 saves, or the score could have been a lot worse.
AUM’s first goal came via the help of the LSUS defense. Mandie Martin crossed a pass into the box but one of the LSUS defenders tipped the shot and misdirected it past McNew for an own goal in the third minute of action.
Johnsdottir scored her first goal of the match, and first of the season, on an excellent assist from freshman Amber Elam. The goal came in the 18th minute and it was the first of three assists from Elam.
Barely three minutes later, the Lady Pilots would cut the lead in half as their leading scorer, Julia Vaughan would score on an assist from Caitlin Smith.
AUM pushed the lead out to 3-1 with Wade’s first goal of the match. It was a nice run by Wade, who received a double assist from Tinna Haukdsdottir and from Elam. That is where the scoring ended at halftime with AUM holding the two goals lead.
In the 61st minute, Johnsdottir was able to score her second goal of the match on Elam ’s third assist. Elam was able to get in the middle of the Lady Pilots defense and spotted Johnsdottir streaking down the left side of the field and was able to hit her in stride for the goal.
LSUS (5-3) scored their final goal of the match in the 78th minute. Holly Jaynes came off the bench and was able to pick up a loose ball in front of the AUM net and put the shot in the goal for their second, and last, score of the match.
AUM finished off the scoring with Wade’s second goal of the match. This one came via the assist from Johnsdottir who had led Wade down the middle of the field with her pass. Wade drew the goal keeper out away from the net and scooted around her with the ball and the final score.
The Lady Pilots will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon for a home contest versus Alcorn State. LSUS defeated Alcorn State 10-0 in earlier action this season. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM at "The Swamp" on the LSUS campus.
