Alvarez's single gives Pack win over LSUS

Westwego, La.- Bobby Alvarez’s single down the right field line plated Bryan LaVoie with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Loyola a 9-8 victory over LSU-Shreveport Sunday afternoon at Segnette Field.
Loyola trailed 3-1 as the game entered the bottom of the fifth inning. The Wolfpack exploded with five runs, all with two outs, in the frame to give them a 6-3 lead. Brian Mason plated the first run of the inning as the Loyola right fielder singled, scoring Chris Lizana. Later in the inning, Jerry Campos singled with the bases loaded to score Josh Borges and Mason. Andy Rodriguez followed with another single that scored Marc Jaynes. Matt Dozier reached on an error by the Pilot third baseman Bryan Cooksey that scored David Kathman for the final run of the inning.
The Pilots tied the score in their half of the sixth. Colin Moro drove in two runs with a single to center field and Cooksey followed with a run scoring single of his own to tie the score.
The game remained tied until the Pilot half of the seventh.
Bryan Stebbings doubled to left center and two LSUS runners scored to give the Pilots an 8-6 advantage.
Loyola answered with one run in each of the next three Wolfpack frames. The first came in the seventh as Alvarez drove in Rodriguez with a one out single to right. In the eighth, Marc Jaynes hit a solo home run that knotted the score at 8-8. Alvarez again drove in a big run as the Wolfpack center fielder drove in the game winner in the ninth.
"We didn't show up for the second game of the double header yesterday. The team answered the coaching staff's challenge to play a full game from the first pitch to the last. We will compete in this league if we continue to give the effort and get the performances we had today," said Loyola head coach Doc Beeman.
Matt Wendt (1-1) got the victory in relief. He threw a scoreless top of the ninth and walked a batter in completing the inning. Starter Kevin Fontenot went four innings and gave up three runs, two earned on six hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Loyola (7-14, 2-4 GCAC) had 13 hits in the game. Jaynes led going 3 for 5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Rodriguez also went 3 for 5 with a run scored and a RBI. Alvarez finished the afternoon 2 for 5 with two RBI.
For Shreveport (12-3, 4-2 GCAC), Mark Dainty (1-1) got the loss. He went 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits and walked one. The Pilots also had 13 hits on the day. Colin Moro led going 3 for 5 with a run scored and two RBI.
