Alexander Nets Game-winning Goal in 2-1 Victory
September 09, 2007
Shreveport, La. - The Lady Pilots went into halftime of today’s game trailing 1-0 after Southern’s Meghan Podrecca was successful on a penalty kick at the 26:20 mark in the first half. Podrecca’s first-half goal was the first time the Lady Pilots have allowed an opponent to score in the first half of a game this season.
However, much like yesterday, the Lady Pilots controlled the ball for the vast majority of the game. LSUS came up empty on 13 first-half shot attempts before finally finding a goal nearly 22 minutes into the second half. Freshman Caitlin Smith got the Lady Pilots on the board at the 67:20 mark with her second goal of the season. Smith received the pass from Calandre Singh and knocked it into the back of the net from six feet out.
Both teams would go scoreless for the next 27 minutes, until senior Rachel Alexander punched in what would eventually be the game-winning goal for the Lady Pilots. After fellow senior Brenna Bussart found Alexander running through the defense, Alexander took one dribble and fired the game-winner past the Southern goalkeeper. The goal was Alexander’s first game-winner of her LSUS career.
Although the action on the Southern offensive end was slim-to-none, LSUS goalkeeper Kelsi McNew made three key saves in the second half to help seal the victory for the Lady Pilots.
LSUS (4-2) will begin Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon versus Belhaven College. Kickoff is set for 5:00 PM in Jackson, Miss.
