| About Amy: | High school activities that prepared for college challenges: While in high school, I was involved in honors and AP classes that have helped ease the shift from high school schoolwork to college schoolwork. I was also a member of National Honors Society, Octagon Club, and FCA, which all contributed to a positive mindset before entering the new atmosphere of college. Factors considered in choosing major or program: I wanted to major in something that interests me and would provide opportunities for an enjoyable career in my future. I have always loved reading and writing, so becoming an English major seemed to be the perfect fit for me. I know the English program at LSUS will give me the tools I need to succeed for a career in the publishing business through in-depth studies of literature and writing. My Reason(s) for choosing LSUS: I was initially drawn to LSUS because of its location and academic standards. I don't have to worry about getting home-sick because it is close to home, and I know LSUS provides its students a quality education. LSUS offers students a wonderful learning environment and plenty of opportunities to grow academically and personally. Campus resources that have helped him/her get the best education at LSUS: The resource I have found to be most valuable at LSUS is the Noel Memorial Library. This library offers countless research materials, including a rare book collection donated by James Smith Noel. Students can also reserve private rooms for study groups or meetings, providing them a quiet, proactive work space. My favorite LSUS professor is (and why): Although I haven't been attending LSUS for that long, I have already noticed how great many of the professors are. One of my favorite professors is Rhonda Failey, my psychology teacher. I encourage any student to take her course, not only because it is a requirement, but because she makes learning about the mind interesting and fun. My favorite thing about LSUS (and why): The advantage of LSUS that stands out the most to me is the small student to teacher ratio, 25:1. This allows students to receive individual attention from their professors and enables them to become closer with their classmates. My LSUS club / organization memberships include: I am a member of Chi Alpha, a weekly Bible study held in the University Center. Chi Alpha welcomes everyone and is a great organization for anyone looking for a place of fellowship. A memorable moment at LSUS: I will always remember my first day at LSUS. I remember how excited I was sitting in my first college class and how I thought about all the great possibilities LSUS has to offer me. Looking back, I know I will never forget the indescribable emotions that came over me, knowing the next chapter of my life was about to begin. My favorite activity outside of my coursework is: My favorite activity goes as follows: 1) Go to Blockbuster and find a good movie. 2) Pay my late fee (because I always have one) and rent the movie of my choice. 3) Go home and watch it with my boyfriend and have a bowl of popcorn! My other interests include: I love watching Thursday night TV (Survivor and The Office all in one night…Woo hoo!), reading "chick-lit" novels, and playing games that involve pop-culture trivia. My career goal(s) are: After college I hope to pursue a career as a book editor for a major publishing company. I would love to work with up-and-coming novelists and play a role in making their dreams come true by publicizing their writings. My LSUS email is: Smitha32@lsus.edu "Best Advice" for a first time Freshman? I would advise first time freshmen to get involved on campus. LSUS always holds events early-on in the year to help new students get adjusted to college and meet new people. This is the best way for students to become more comfortable in a new setting and enjoy their time here at LSUS. |
