Ka'Lani O'Shea

Hometown: Clovis, NM.
Major: Chemistry
Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2011

About Ka'Lani:

High school activities that prepared for college challenges:  Cheerleading, Band/Section Leader, French Club President,  National Honor Society and Interact.

Factors considered in choosing major or program:   I thought about what I liked to do in high school. What my favorite class was, how well I did in the classes, how well I understood the material, and what I would love to do for the rest of my college years.

My Reason(s) for choosing LSUS:   I choose LSUS for a few reasons. I want to become a surgeon, so I had to choose a good medical school. I am from a small town in New Mexico and there were only two schools around my town that I considered. But I did not want to attend either one. There was probably a school closer to me but I just liked and was drawn to LSUS. The things which appealed to me the most was the small size and the fact there is a medical school located here too. I feel really comfortable here and I am very glad I decided to attend here.

Campus resources that have helped you get the best education at LSUS:  The writing center, Chemistry Club, library, campus wide lab, and MAPS.

My favorite LSUS professor is (and why):  My favorite professor is Mrs. Amanda Lawerence a chemistry professor. I really liked the way she taught and she was fair in her grading. Even though her test were somewhat hard you did learn the information and you had to study or you would not get a good grade on the test. Also she is very nice and even to this day everytime we see each other we say hi.

My favorite thing about LSUS (and why):  Is how small the classes are and how the teachers know your name and not just you as a number. I like the small campus size also because I tend to get lost easily so if I was on a big campus I would more then likely get lost. Also it has a very good academic program to where the focus a lot on academics which helps me succeed.

My LSUS club / organization memberships include:  Phi Mu, MAPS, Chemistry Club, Phi Eta Sigma and hopefully Alpha Epsilon Delta

A memorable moment at LSUS:   My most memorably moment was the first day of school my freshman year. I did not have my fisrt class till ten. I slept in and was really excited about going to school, so I got dressed rather quickly and I still had a little bit of time to waste. So I ate breakfast and just waited around impatiently. It was about 9:30 when I left my apartment (I live on campus so I walk to school), and it took maybe between five and seven minutes for me to get to the buisness building because I was going to university 100. I looked at the time and it was still between 15 and 20 minutes before class was to begin. I started walking up the stairs getting very nervous because I thought I would not know exactly which classroom it was, upper classmen would look at me like I was stupid and that I would be this weird girl standing in the hallway. But when I turned the corner and there was about 20 people standing outside the classroom. It made me feel really good that I was not the only one to get there so early and be excited about college.

My favorite activity outside of my coursework is: Hanging out with my friends and having fun!

My other interests include:  I like to spend time by myself and read to get away from all the stress of school. Hanging out with friends and dong fun things over the weekend is the best! I get to get away from the stress and have fun with the people I care about. I also love talking to my family since I am so far from home. When I talk to them it is like catching up with someone I have not seen in years! And of course, school! I love being in school and enjoy knowing I am doing something I can always be proud of!!

My career goal(s) are:  I want to attend medical school and become either a Thoracic or Plastic suregeon.

"Best Advice" for a first time Freshman?  I know leaving home is a very scary thing but it has to be done sooner or later. Coming to college is going to seem like the scariest thing in the world, but once you settle in it will be like your home! Getting involved in clubs and organizations is a really good way to meet people. Meeting people is the start of your support system away from home. Also it will be really good when you find yourself cramming for finals! Do not be scared to be yourself, meet new people, and have fun! The best memories will be the ones you make outside the classroom.
