Louisiana State University Shreveport is proud to announce that the College of Business, Education, and Human Development offers a Doctorate in Leadership Studies. This doctoral program—the first of its kind to be offered on the Shreveport campus—allows LSU Shreveport to offer the highest level of instruction in a university.
The Leadership Studies Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) degree is not just for educators; just as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is not just for philosophers! The Ed.D. degree is an interdisciplinary terminal degree program with the primary purpose of enhancing leadership potential that will support personal and community growth in various human endeavors. Conscientious working professionals who seek to advance their roles as leaders in public, non-profit, or corporate organizations, as well as scholarly opportunities in higher education, will find this degree supports a critical step in attaining their future goals. Some candidates may also extend their learning to engage in entrepreneurial endeavors related to business, education, health, or other human services.
The Leadership Studies program will achieve its purpose by fostering scholarly inquiry and a working understanding of the following critical components of leadership: leadership theory with an integrative approach; management of complex organizations; diversity and social justice; resource allocation and development; policy analysis and development; power, politics, and influence; and data collection, analysis, and research. The program further supports the enhancement of leadership potential by including at least five classes in personally chosen cognate areas selected from Business Administration, Educational Leadership, Educational Technology, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Non-profit Administration, Higher Education Leadership, Evaluation and Assessment, History or other approved content areas.
The Leadership Studies program will provide working professionals with relevant and practical research skills to utilize leadership theories for transformational change, and knowledge to identify and solve problems of practice through collaboration with key stakeholders. Candidates will be given the opportunity to develop these attributes through content courses, research courses, personal research, and a practical internship.
The program, designed to accommodate working adults with other full-time obligations, can be completed within four years by taking two intensive courses per semester, year-round for a total of 63 semester hours. Candidates for this type of program are typically working professionals who have a master's degree with at least three years of work experience. Students take a prescribed set of courses and academic experiences in a cohort model, beginning in the fall semester.
Recognizing the intensity of doctoral study while supporting both integration and application of content, the program delivers the doctoral courses during the first two years in a hybrid delivery system of approximately 70% face-to-face class meetings, and the rest online. The face-to-face class meetings are enhanced by online discussion forums, guest speakers with expertise in the field, and study group sessions with cohort members. During the third year, students specialize in a cognate area of interest for which there are several 100% online options as well as face-to-face options. The fourth year is taken as independent research under the guidance of a dissertation advisor.
