Certifications

Add-on Certification Programs
Louisiana State University Shreveport offers certification programs for educators who are seeking to add to their teacher's certificate, some of which are 100% online.  Classes are fast-paced and dynamic.     

English as a Second Language (ESL) Add-on Certification Program  
Program is open all students; no Master's degree required.    
Each course is 100% online and runs for 7 weeks, allowing flexibility and convenience for educators who work full time in the classroom.    

Required courses:

  • ESL 601 or ESL 401 (Introduction to Language and Culture)
  • ESL 602 or ESL 402 (Linguistics for the ESL Educator)
  • ESL 603 or ESL 403 (Methods for Teaching ESL)
  • ESL 604 or ESL 404 (Curriculum & Multicultural Classroom)

A valid type A, B, C, or Level 1, 2, or 3 elementary or secondary teaching certificate is required for add-on certification.

Reading Specialist Add-on Certification Program
Program is open to all graduate students and can be applied toward a M. Ed. Degree or +30 hours.
Each course is 100% online and runs for 7 weeks, allowing flexibility and convenience for educators who work full time in the classroom.
Required courses:

  • ED 740 (Foundations in Reading)
  • ED 741 (Reading Assessment)
  • ED 743 (Practicum in Reading)
  • ED 744 (Reading in the Content Areas)

Required for certification:

  • A Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • A valid Type A, A*, B, B*, Level 3, Level 3*, Level 2 or Level 2* Louisiana teaching certificate
  • 3 years of experience in the licensed or certified field


Gifted Education Add-on Certification Program
Program is open to all graduate students.
Each course is 100% online and runs for 7 weeks, allowing flexibility and convenience for educators who work full time in the classroom.
Required courses:

  • ED 763 (Teaching for Social and Emotional Dev/Gifted)
  • ED 764 (Characteristics/Study of Gifted Individuals)
  • ED 765 (Methods of Teaching the Gifted)
  • ED 766 (Curriculum Development for the Gifted)
  • ED 773 (Developing Creative Thought in Gifted Learners)
  • ED 780 (Educational Technology Applied to the Classroom)
  • ED 777 (Practicum in Gifted Education)

Required for certification:

  • Master's Degree
  • Either a 3 hour practicum for academically gifted (ED 777) OR three years of successful teaching in academically gifted

Library Science Add-on Certification
Program is open to all students.
Required courses:

  • LIBS 412 or LIBS 612 (Library Materials for Adolescents)
  • LIBS 415 or LIBS 615 (Library Materials for Children)
  • LIBS 427 or LIBS 627 (Information Sources and Services)
  • LIBS 417 or LIBS 617 (Organization of Library Materials)
  • LIBS 418 or LIBS 618 (School Library Administration)
  • LIBS 430 or LIBS 630 (Library Science Practicum)

A valid type A, B, C, or Level 1, 2, 3, or OS Louisiana teaching certificate is required for add-on certification.  

Special Education Add-on Certification ProgramsCertification in Mild / Moderate Grades 1-5
Classes are open to all students with prerequisite of ED 250. 
Required classes:

  • ED 388 (Assessment and Evaluation of Students with Disabilities)
  • ED 202 (Introduction to Educational Technology)
  • ED 304 (Behavioral Support and Intervention)
  • ED 305 (Collaborative Teaming)
  • ED 303 (Instructional Practices in Special Education)
  • ED 319 (Reading and Literacy)

Certification in Mild / Moderate Grades 4-8 or 6-12
Classes are open to all students with prerequisite of ED 250.
Required classes:

  • ED 388 (Assessment and Evaluation of Students with Disabilities)
  • ED 202 (Introduction to Educational Technology)
  • ED 409 (Self-Determination & Transition)
  • ED 304 (Behavioral Support and Intervention)
  • ED 305 (Collaborative Teaming)
  • ED 303 (Instructional Practices in Special Education)

A valid type A, B, C, or Level 1, 2, or 3 elementary or secondary teaching certificate is required for add-on certification.

Technology Add-on Certification Programs
Certification in Computer Literacy
Classes are open to all students.
Each course is 100% online and runs for 7 weeks, allowing flexibility and convenience for educators who work full time in the classroom.
Required classes:

  • ED 202 or ED 780
  • ED 481 (Design and Development of Multimedia Instructional Units)
  • ED 484 (Educational Telecommunications, Networks, & Internet)

A valid type A, B, C, or Level 1, 2, or 3 elementary or secondary teaching certificate is required for add-on certification.  

Certification as an Educational Technology Facilitator
Classes are open to any graduate student in any program; no master's degree required.
Each course is 100% online and runs for 7 weeks, allowing flexibility and convenience for educators who work full time in the classroom.

Required classes:

  • ED 202 or ED 780
  • ED 681 (Design and Development of Multimedia Instructional Units)
  • ED 684 (Educational Telecommunications, Network, & Internet)
  • ED 785 (Technology Leadership in Schools)

A valid type B or Level 2 Louisiana teaching certificate (3 years of teaching experience) is required for add-on certification.  

Certification as an Educational Technology Leader
Can be an add-on certification to an existing Master's degree, or can be pursued as a focus of the MEDCI: Educational Technology degree.
Each course is 100% online and runs for 7 weeks, allowing flexibility and convenience for educators who work full time in the classroom.
Required classes:

  • ED 681 (Design and Development of Multimedia Instructional Units)
  • ED 684 (Educational Telecommunications, Network, & Internet)
  • ED 785 (Technology Leadership in Schools)
  • ED 786 (Technology Planning & Administration)
  • ED 787 (Professional Development for K-12 Technology Integration)
  • ED 788 (Advanced Telecommunications and Distance Education)
  • ED 789 (Educational Technology Research, Evaluation, and Assessment)

Required for certification:

  • A valid Type A, or Level 3 Louisiana teaching certificate (master's degree and 5 years of experience)
  • 9 semester hours of graduate credit in facilitator courses
  • 12 semester hours of graduate credit total
