Overview

Great jobs start with a math degree from LSU Shreveport!

We offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics along with a variety of courses for students in other degree programs, such as those in the physical and social sciences, finance, and education.

A recent ranking puts "mathematician" as the number one job in the United States (Wall Street Journal, January 2009, "Doing the Math to Find the Good Jobs: Mathematicians Land Top Spot in New Ranking of Best and Worst Occupations in the U.S."). Criteria for "best" include income, physical demands, security, stress, and work environment.

But moreover, "Math is at the crux of who gets paid," according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which tracks college graduates' job offers. "If you have those skills, you are an extremely valuable asset." (CNN-Money.com, July 2009, "Most Lucrative College Degrees".) This applies not only to math majors, but to anyone in a field where quantitative skills are needed. LSUS offers a Minor in Mathematics (see the LSUS catalog for more information), something a graduate in any field could do well to advertise on job or grad school applications.

Math majors can tailor course selections toward any of these mathematical flavors: pure, applied, financial, or statistical/actuarial mathematics. Active faculty research in these areas has lead to various projects, internships, and publications for students.

Faculty and students also join forces in a math club, an outreach tutorial service, math contests, trips to conferences, and a weekly colloquium.
