School of Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarships

The following scholarships may be available for the Fall 2017 semester. Deadline to apply will be Friday, April 7, 2017. To apply, click on Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarship Application.

H.F. Sockrider, Jr. Pre-Law Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must have earned a total of at least 60 semester hours with an overall GPA of 3.2.
  • The recipient must take LSAT and plan to go to law school. Will complete Law Office Internship and/or Supreme Court Internship, or Supreme Court Historical Society Internship.
  • The recipient must take POLI 211, POLI 411, BLAW 332 and CJ 453.
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Allena J. Longfellow Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a graduate student in the M.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences Program with a graduate GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • The recipient must be fully admitted to the M.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences Program.
  • The recipient must have completed at least one core course and demonstrated service to the community, university or MLA.
  • Amount to be awarded: $500 annually, each spring semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Walter O. Bigby Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must be majoring in English or History, and must have earned a total of at least 30 semester hours but fewer than 90 with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and an LSUS GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Financial need may also be considered.
  • The recipient must enroll in both the fall and spring semesters and must complete at least 15 hours.
  • Amount to be awarded: $500 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

John and Joanna Magale Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must be age 25 or younger, not eligible for TOPS, and enrolled in a program in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • The recipient must complete at least six credit hours each semester and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Amount to be awarded: $500 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

LSU-S Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must be enrolled full-time in a program in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and must have earned a total of at least 60 semester hours with a GPA of 2.5.
  • Consideration will be given to academic performance, financial need, and extra curricular activities.
  • The recipient must not be receiving any other type of grant or scholarship regardless of funding source.
  • Amount to be awarded: $500 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Milton Finley Scholarship for Excellence in History & Social Sciences

  • The recipient must be a full-time student majoring in History, Criminal Justice, or Sociology seeking first undergraduate degree.
  • The recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Amount to be awarded: $350 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Eric Brock Memorial Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a full-time student with at least 60 credit hours majoring in History, Sociology, or Criminal Justice, with a 3.0 GPA.
  • All applicants must submit a scholarly research paper to Dr. Gary Joiner.
  • Amount to be awarded: $300 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Cory Katherine Hiers MLA Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a fully-admitted student in the M.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences Program with a graduate GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • The recipient must have completed one core course.
  • Amount to be awarded: $200 per year (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Rodney Spigener Endowed Scholarship

  • The recipient must have a demonstrated interest in attending law school.
  • The recipient must take POLI 211, POLI 411, and CJ 453.
  • The recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Dept. of Communications Academic Award Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a declared Communications Major, and must have completed graduation plan.
  • No grade below "C" on all communications/mass communications courses and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • The recipient must reapply for scholarship each semester to qualify. Academic Advisor must be a member of the Dept. of Communications Faculty.
  • Amount to be awarded: $500 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Dr. Norman A. Dolch Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a full-time student and a member of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance with online profile at Nonprofit Leadership Alliance in Kansas City, MO.
  • The recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and a record of volunteer service.
  • The recipient must write three essays to questions provided (contact Stacey Hargis for essay questions). New applications are required each semester.
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Dr. Bernadette Jones Palombo Memorial Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a full time student with at least 60 credit hours, seeking a degree in Criminal Justice and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • The recipient must also present a publishable paper on an historical topic in order to receive the scholarship.
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

American Studies Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a full time student.
  • The recipient must show a need for assistance in attending the Washington Semester.
  • Amount to be awarded: $1,000 per summer semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

LSUS Washington Semester Program Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a full time student.
  • The recipient must attend the Washington Semester.
  • Amount to be awarded: $1,000 per summer semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Zeak Buckner Writing Scholarship

  • The recipient must be an undergraduate Humanities or Social Sciences Major.
  • Must submit an eight page or more paper written during the current academic year (year prior to the award) that showcases his/her scholarly or creative writing.
  • The written paper must be unpublished and the student's original work.
  • Amount to be awarded: $200 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Byrd / Fitzgerald Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a graduate of Byrd High School pursuing a degree in English or English Education and has a special interest in writing.
  • The recipient must be an entering freshman and a full-time student.
  • Amount to be awarded: $300 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Evelyn Herring English Club Scholarship

  • The recipient must be a member of the English Club and demonstrate active club participation.
  • The recipient must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

MS in Nonprofit Scholarship

  • The recipient must be enrolled in six credit hours of Nonprofit Administration courses.
  • The recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

H. J. Sachs Scholarship

  • The recipient must be an English or English Education Major.
  • Consideration will be given to academic performance, academic area, and financial need.
  • Amount to be awarded: $300 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Shreveport Historic Perservation Society

  • The recipient must be a History Major and in good standing with the University.
  • The recipient must research an approved topic on Shreveport Downtown Neighborhoods and prepare a conference quality project on said topic.
  • The recipient must be prepared to present project to the Shreveport Historical Preservation Society.
  • Amount to be awarded: $250 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)

Simons-Lincove Scholarship

  • The recipient must have earned at least 60 hours, and have completed 6 credit hours of foreign language.
  • The recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.25.
  • Amount to be awarded: $750 per semester (may be increased or decreased depending on available funds)
